Cycling

Smooth winding mountain roads, high altitude and easy access to some of the most challenging sections of international cycle races such as the Tour de France and La Marmotte make Les 2 Alpes a great location for those who are seriously into their road biking. Or at least that’s how it looks to me, who can barely ride a bike!

Every summer’s day I’m in awe of those who tackle the ascents of our local roads by pedal power alone. With 1/12 gradients aplenty, some cars really struggle and it’s great to see cyclists overtaking the slower drivers.

From the Lac du Chambon, below Les 2 Alpes, cyclists can ride left towards Grenoble and Alpe d’Huez, with it’s famous 21 bends, or right towards Italy via the Col du Lauteret or up to the Col du Galibier. From the other side of the resort, via the Venosc télécabine are routes up into the valley of St Christophe and La Bérarde and down towards Bourg d’Oisans.

Towards the end of August, Les 2 Alpes hosts the Marco Pantani Memorial Cycle Race, celebrating the memory and achievements of the legendary Italian cyclist. There are two courses – 164km and 64km – which take on some of the local mountain passes (cols) and finish in the resort. This year the event will take place on 20th-21st August 2011.
