Bourg d’Oisans is widely considered to be the gateway to the region. It’s located at the base of Alpe d’Huez and on the route to Les 2 Alpes and Venosc. The town is much busier in the summer than the winter and is a popular base for cyclists. There are lots of campsite and the village has a great buzz, with a Saturday market that’s definitely worth a visit.

There are plenty of shops catering to the needs of cyclists, campers, hikers and snowsports enthusiast. If you do need to stock up or want some equipment advice, we always go to La Montagne by the river Bourg d’Oisans, next to the Rive Gauche restaurant.

Bourg d’Oisans has, well, all the usual amenities you’d expect from a small mountain town, including two pharmacies, a few banks and a post office. On the edge of the village is the largest supermarket in the area, Casino (with a petrol station), and tucked into the back streets you’ll find a fantastic little organic food store.

On the edge of town you’ll find the local bus station, the VFD bus station. Buses run from here to Grenoble via Vizille and onwards to Alpe d’Huez, Les 2 Alpes and other destinations. For more information on the bus routes, click here.

In the winter there generally isn’t much going on in Bourg but it comes into its own the moment the snow melts. From as early as April, cyclists and camper vans descend on the town, using it as a base for exploring the local routes and villages.

The season continues until the end of September and – at just 720m above sea level and surrounded by mountains – it gets pretty toasty. Temperatures in the height of summer have been known to climb over 35ºC, making the local pool and rivers seriously tempting! There are plenty of shady spots if you need to cool down and the evenings do bring lower temperatures.

As a hub, Bourg d’Oisans gives easy access to the surrounding villages and the resorts of Alpe d’Heuz and Les 2 Alpes. It’s also a destination in its own right for cyclists, hikers and various other activities.
