MTB

Alpe d’Huez is content with its status as a mecca for cyclists, fascinated by the challenge of the resort’s 21 bends. But no longer is it the exclusive destination of the skin-tight unitard brigade. You’re now just as likely to come across the chunky tyres, full body armour and death-defying speeds of the town’s growing contingent of MTB fans.

The resort boasts 35 MTB trails, covering over 250km of the mountain. With 16 cross country trails and 19 downhill trails, there’s plenty to keep you entertained… and there are three additional downhill trails for those with enough experience and courage! Although there is a variety of standard of trail available, the gradient of the trails here can be quite steep… it is a mountain afterall. You can take a look at the trail map for Alpe d’Huez here.

While MTB riders hurtle down the trails for most of the the eight-week summer season, it’s the Megavalanche that’s the main draw. If you’ve not heard of the event before, here are some stats: 2000 riders; 40% Brits; 1450m vertical drop to qualify; 2600m vertical drop in the final; fastest recorded time: 45minutes, 37 seconds. It’s mental and widely considered to be the craziest MTB race in the world!

The event is scheduled for 8th-10th July 2011 and registration opens on 10th January 2011 at 3pm. But before you register, check Destination Oisan’s coverage of the 2010 Megavalanche.
